Check Out Our Chicks

Two weeks ago we got 3 Barred Rock chicks. My DH use to have a one legged Barred Rock hen named Charlie. He use to carry it around all the time. It was his special hen so we decided to get a few Barred Rocks for sentimental reasons. Meet Charlie, Joe, and Henny. (Some of the hens have ended up with boy names! I figure there just nicknames for Charlotte and Josephine! :)

Callie has found them absolutely fascinating. She will stand there looking through the hole staring at them or with her head over the top of the box. She doesn't seem to want to hurt them but can't stand to let any peeping go unattended.

On Friday we got 6 more chicks. This time they are Black Sex Links. The Barred Rock seem to get along just fine. See they're all sleeping. Isn't it amazing how much the Barred Rocks have grown in just two weeks!

Around the House

So what's been happening around our house lately?!? Well, our chickens have begun to lay!

I don't think I mentioned that several weeks ago our chicken count went from 9 hens to 17 hens and a rooster! A family from church didn't want their chickens any more so they wanted to know if we wanted them. We said yes and upon getting them we discovered that they had a rooster too!

I wasn't to sure about the rooster but I have to say not only is he handsome but he is nice. The eight hens that we got from our friends had been laying but they needed a light to help them start back up again, so we put a light in the coop and within a week some of them started laying. Our original eight are also just starting to lay. We are now getting between 9-12 eggs a day. Its very exciting to be collecting our own eggs!!!

Chicken Update

Well it has been a while since I've updated you on our chickens. Let me tell you they are growing very quickly and now look more like hens than chicks. We have now moved them to a larger coop where they have access to both indoors and outdoors.

This coop was built by the previous owner. My mother-in-law suggested I find an old board and paint the words "The Coop" in black and hang it above the door. I think that would look really cute. Maybe I'll do that this weekend.

Here are the girls now!! Quite a bit bigger than the last time I posted pictures!!
